FAQ - Microneedling

Hollywood A-listers including Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kim Kardashian all swear by microneedling as their secret in keeping their skin smooth, ageless, and flawless.

If you want your skin to look and feel like celebrities, you may want to give it a try, too!

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a skincare procedure that is minimally invasive and that stimulates collagen and elastin production.  Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, it uses a lot of small needles to puncture the first layer of the skin.

The purpose of microneedling treatment is to generate new collagen, for smoother, firmer, more toned skin.  The microneedling process works to rejuvenate the skin by boosting collagen production.  This results in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; and elevates the overall texture of your skin.  In addition, microneedling can be used to deposit medication or skin care products, such as vitamin c, deeper into the skin.

Microneedling works on all skin types and complexions.

Collagen induction therapy is one of the healthiest, most natural types of facial rejuvenation.

COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN

Collagen is a type of protein that is necessary for keeping your skin, bones and muscles healthy.  Without a sufficient supply of collagen, the skin becomes dry, wrinkly and tired.

Another protein, Elastin, is a flexible connective tissue that makes up the outermost layer of your skin, the dermis.

Aging causes decline of collagen and elastin in the skin, contributing to wrinkles and other signs of ageing.  Skin can also lose collagen due to injuries, such as acne scarring, stretch marks and other scars.

Collagen Induction Therapy combats this in a natural, holistic and very professional way!  Multiple scientific studies have shown that aging skin becomes more elastic and has less wrinkles after undergoing collagen induction therapy.

HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING WORK?

Collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment, involving an electric pen-like wand with micro-needles.  The microneedling pen is used to create multiple minuscule wounds, or "micro channels" on the surface of your skin.  The beauty of this "micro channels" is that they are able to accept the nourishing ingredients from skin care products, resulting in better absorption of such products.

These micro-wounds / injuries on the skin then activates the body's natural healing process.  During the healing process your cells start to produce more collagen and elastin, which then fills the micro-wounds resulting in smoother skin.  At the same time your cells are rapidly replenishing themselves with collagen, they are also making way for the regrowth of new, rejuvenated skin tissue.

In other words, this anti-aging treatment is like a "reset button" for tired skin.

Microneedling will trigger temporary inflammation and redness on the top layer of the skin.  However, this momentary discomfort opens the door to larger-scale healing.  We do advise to apply numbing cream 15 to 20 minutes before the treatment, so you can't feel the tiny needle pricks.

Most people do microneedling on the face, but it can be done on other parts of the body as well.  For example, microneedling on the thighs can help treat stretch marks.

MICRONEEDLING PEN FEATURES

  • Adjustable speed and depth of needles for customizable treatment from 0.25mm to improve product penetration, all the way to 2.5mm to promote collagen formation and fill in acne scars and wrinkles.  (Please refer below to more information on needle depth)
  • Very user friendly and much more control over results, since all you have to do is make sure the plastic casing is in contact with the skin in order to get the proper level of penetration.
  • Replaceable heads / cartridges to the device can be used by more than one person.  Sharing of cartridges with others are strictly not allowed.

HOW TO USE A MICRONEEDLING PEN

  • You will need:  Microneedling Pen device, new cartridge, alcohol solution to disinfect, numbing cream, serum (hyaluronic acid is recommended).
  • Ensure device is charged.
  • Clean your face with your cleanser of choice to remove all traces of makeup and lotions, also tie your hair away from your face.
  • Apply numbing cream and wait 15 - 20 minutes, make sure to wipe off all residue.
  • Thoroughly cleanse face.
  • Apply pre-treatment serum.  Use a hydrating serum such as Hyaluronic Acid before microneedling, to lubricate the skin, helping the needles to glide and preventing drag.  Do not use Vitamin C, retinol, exfoliants and brightening ingredients.
  • Open brand new cartridge packet and attach cartridge into your device.  Ensure hands are clean and don’t touch the tip or needles of the cartridge. You may also wear gloves.
  • Choose your desired needle depth by rotating the dial on your device.
  • Work in small areas and apply serum to each area before needling.  This will help to ensure that the pen does not drag or pull on the skin.  The recommended pattern to move the pen for best results is vertical, horizontal, and then diagonal in both directions.
  • Using light pressure and without dragging, repeat this motion over each area two times.
  • Apply moisturizer or repairing serum after use.
  • You will experience mild redness and swelling after needling, as well as needle point bleeding.  This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
  • Avoid working out/sweating or applying makeup for 24 hours.  If going outside you must apply a high protection sunscreen.
  • The day after treatment, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and apply a nourishing moisturizer.

HOW OFTEN CAN MICRONEEDLING BE DONE?

Microneedling can safely be performed every 4 to 6 weeks.  For collagen induction you will require at least 3 treatments.  Scar reduction requires between 3 and 6 treatments.

NEEDLE DEPTH AND CARTRIDGE INFORMATION

Different needle depths will depend on the results you want to achieve.

Needle depth of 1mm and below will help even out skin texture and hyperpigmentation.  This length is also perfect for those who wish to improve the penetration of skin products and serums into the skin. The deeper the product can get into your skin, the more effective it will be.

Needle depth of 1mm - 2.5mm is recommended for those wishing to improve the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines and stretch marks. Remember multiple treatments are required for improvement in the appearance of these issues, performed roughly once every 4 weeks.

Treatment  Needle Depth in mm
Hair Regrowth 0.25 - 1.5
Acne Scars 0.5 - 1.5
Fine Lines 0.5 - 1.5
Loose Skin 1 - 1.5
Hyperpigmentation 0.5 - 1.25
Sun Damage 0.5 - 1.25
Serum Absorption 0.25
Uneven Skin Tone 0.25 - 1
Stretch Marks 2 - 2.5
Deep scars 1.5 - 2.5

There are three cartridge options:  12 pins, 16 pins and 36 pins.

We recommend the 12 pin and 16 pin (16 pin cartridges only available with the M8 device) for face. The 36 pin is recommended for the body (For stretch marks, for example).

When microneedling areas of the body (such as the legs or hands), avoid needling over the bony parts.  Ensure only to use 36 pin cartridges for microneedling the body and take precaution not to use any active ingredients (such as acids or retinoids) after microneedling.  Regarding needle depth, we recommend using 0.5mm for legs and up to 1.5mm for fattier areas of the body.

DOWNTIME

There is no downtime as such, however, the first day or two after your treatment you will experience redness.  Avoid microneedling if you wish to attend an event within 48 to 72 hours post-treatment.
